One-on-one consultations with Library staff
Need help with referencing? Our library staff offer friendly, practical support to help you understand your referencing style, use sources correctly, and avoid plagiarism. Book a 20-minute session for help with:
- Referencing basics and advanced queries
- Using Avondale’s referencing guides
- In-text citations and reference lists
- Managing references with EndNote (Avondale’s supported reference management tool)
Appointments are available in person at both the Lake Macquarie (Cooranbong) and Sydney (Wahroonga) campuses, online via Zoom, or by email (written feedback).
Scope of the referencing service
Library staff may:
- Provide feedback on referencing style and application (APA, Turabian, MLA).
- Identify a sample of errors or inconsistencies.
- Provide guidance on formatting a reference list or bibliography.
- Explain how to reference different types of sources.
- Share resources and examples (e.g., LibGuides, style manuals).
Limitations of the Service
To keep the service fair, sustainable, and aligned with best practice:
- No proofreading or editing: We do not correct grammar, spelling, structure, or content.
- No full-paper reviews: Students are encouraged to identify specific referencing concerns.
- No full reference list checks: Only one reference list check per assessment is permitted. Staff may check a sample and provide feedback for students to apply across the rest.
- No duplicate reviews: Students cannot submit the same paper multiple times for repeated reference list checks.
- Time limits apply:
- Consultations (in-person or online) are 20 minutes.
- Written feedback is capped at 1 hour per submission.
- Referencing focus only: Feedback is limited to referencing. Students requiring assistance with writing development will be referred to the Learning Advisor Service.
